Speech Therapy

The Speech Language Therapy programme at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre is designed to provide service to those with communication impairments who are residents of the Centre or who attend the outpatients’ clinic for children with developmental disabilities.  There is at present no professional speech therapist but the programme is managed by the rehabilitation assistant, under the guidance of the only speech therapis in the country who is also a VSO.  Intervention is provided in the form of :

  1. Direct assessment and treatment of communication disorders (articulation, language delay disorder, voice, etc.).
  2. Consultation, education of parents by therapist and the classroom teacher re: communication disorder and management.
  3. Providing suggestions for early stimulation and pre-language skills.
  4. Setting up alternative or argumentative communication systems.
